The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has cast his vote in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, with
a call for the sort of intervention that will make the newly redesigned Naira
notes available to ordinary Nigerians.
Atiku voted at his Ajiya Ward in Old GRA, Jimeta, at about
9:30 am amid a surge of supporters, immediately after which he fielded
questions from newsmen.
On the question of scarcity of the new Naira notes, Atiku
said, “To the extent that it was meant to stop vote buying, I think it is a
worthwhile exercise, but then I think the accessibility of the new Naira notes
to the ordinary man needs to be worked on.”
Although Atiku hails from Jada, a local government area in
the southern part of Adamawa State, he regularly stays in Jimeta when he is in
the state and has his voting base in Ajiya Ward, 012, close to his Yola
residence, where he usually casts his vote.
Voting in the Adamawa State capital had been smooth up to
the time of filing this report Saturday morning.
Some observers complained of low turnout of voters at the
various voting stations, but others expressed the opinion that it was still too
early in the day to make such a conclusion.
