The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) says
it is deeply concerned about security and socio-economic problems.
In a Christmas message on Friday, the body of ex-security
officials and other prominent Nigerians, including elder statesmen and women,
urged the government to do more.
A statement by National President, Mohammed Abubakar, said
most of Nigeria’s challenges are deeply rooted and require concerted,
participatory and proactive measures.
The former Inspector General of Police advised citizens to
rededicate themselves and provide durable solutions to the prevailing
situation.
“We must focus on qualitative and functional education
system for our population and enhance agriculture and agro-allied processing.
“This would increase employment, reduce poverty and crimes,
and promote overall growth and development in Nigeria.”
Abubakar announced that AANI will soon convene a national
dialogue of stakeholders on unity and development.
He said the parley will provide a platform for objective
discussion on thorny and contentious issues, with a view to establishing a
common ground for national rebirth.
The group condemned the destruction of lives, property and
deadly activities of terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal
elements.
On the 2023 general election, AANI appealed to the political
class to uphold global best practices.
“They must focus on security, welfare, economic prosperity
and place Nigerians above ambitions and interests. Let there be politicking
devoid of violence”, the statement added.
