It is a shame that Nigeria cannot make its own bullets, instead it imports from Serbia, a small European country battling poverty, Reno Omokri, aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan has said.

 

Omokri made the remark in reaction to CNN’s investigative report on the Lekki Toll Gate shooting that killed and injured dozens of #EndSARS protesters on October 20.

 

The report which cited analyses of bullet casings obtained from the scene of the shooting, said they were made in Serbia. It also stated that the Nigerian army confirmed that it imports bullets and other military hardware from the small country of about 7 million people.

 

“Another sad thing about the @CNN investigation is that Nigeria still buys bullets from Serbia. 50 years ago, Biafrans made their own bullets during the civil war. In 2020, Nigeria still can’t make bullets. We have to depend on a small, poverty-stricken nation like Serbia. Shame!!!”

 

The tweet drew diverse reactions, with many of his followers blaming the situation on ethnocentrism in Nigerian politics while others said even developed nations import military hardware. 

 

Yet some others wondered how much military development Nigeria witnessed under the government Omokri served.

 

A landlocked country in Europe, Serbia with its own history of a turbulent past has grown in science, energy, and education.

 

But contrary to Omokri’s severe remarks about Serbian poverty, the country, though battling rising unemployment, has a per capita income of $7,992 and is 63rd on the global Human Development Index (HDI). Nigeria, which is 158th on the global HDI scale, has a per capita income of $2, 149.
