Tragedy struck in Borno state on Tuesday, January 21 as Boko Haram terrorists reportedly killed an Army officer and seven soldiers during a battle with the insurgents in Mainok, near Maiduguri the Borno state capital. The Nation reports that the ugly incident also left some soldiers injured and two others missing.

However, Legit.ng gathers the Nigerian soldiers also neutralised some of the insurgents while many of them also sustained injuries.

A source cited by the newspaper added that the bodies of the slain soldiers have been taken to an undisclosed medical facility. In a similar development, Boko Haram insurgents abducted four soldiers and two policemen along Damaturu-Maiduguri Road.

The terrorists who were dressed in military uniforms attacked the security officers in an ambush near Auno village on Damaturu-Maiduguri Road. "The Boko Haram fighters were said to have mounted a roadblock on the highway with three Hilux vans before taking away the hostages who were returning from a short break."

“Four military men were abducted in an 18 seater bus while two other policemen were abducted in a Gulf car,” a source said. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has urged motorists to be cautious against fake checkpoints mounted on the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway by Boko Haram terrorists.

The Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Olusegun Adeniyi, gave the advice following the sudden resurgence of terrorist attacks along the highway. Adeniyi who was speaking at an interactive session with journalists stated that the only official checkpoints are located at Benisheikh, Jakana, Auno, Mainok and Njimtilo towns and villages along the highway.
